Install a night latch for added front door security and peace of mind

Properties today are more vulnerable than ever, especially in high-target areas like Kensington, so having the proper security for your doors is essential.

Hundreds of burglaries take place in the borough each and every month, so it’s a great idea to have as much security as possible.

But with so many different styles of front door lock available, it can be difficult to know which type of lock will accommodate your building style.

If you have glass panelled doors, then the type of lock you fit might be different to the one most suitable if you have solid timber doors, as burglars could get access to the door latch by breaking a glass pane. In case you have experienced a burglary, please contact us right away for a fast door lock change after robbery.

How Night Latch Locks Can Help Secure Your Kensington Home

That’s where night latch lock fitting comes in, it complements your own locks and screws directly into the door and frame on the surface to deliver a tight fit for your house security.

When the door is closed, the front door night latch can automatically lock behind you, so you don’t have to worry about whether you locked up for the night or when you go to work.

It’s easy to install secondary door locks, and our team are fully trained, so you can guarantee reliable fitting 24/7 if you need new locks, have lost your keys, or have been locked out.

What is a night latch, and how does it work?

Rim night latches are often referred to as “Yale locks”. A night latch is a secondary security device that complements other styles of door lock with its keyhole to provide complete security.

A night latch is installed directly on the inside of a door that opens inwards, but it does have a rim cylinder on the outside so it can be opened with keys.

On the inside, there is usually either a small button or a lever which can unlock it, and this thumb turn allows you to open the door easily.

It is most suitable for composite style doors as well as wood doors, as the night latch lock fits securely into your door frame and can be left in the closed or open position.

Types of night latch locks

There are three main types of night latch often called Yale locks. You can have any of these night latches installed on your home by our locksmith: standard, deadlocking, and auto-deadlocking.

You ideally want a night latch that automatically shuts the door and locks it whenever it is closed.

Standard night latches

These latches are common on homes that need basic security and will not deadlock when closed, instead their spring mechanisms will automatically cause the door to lock. They can opened from the inside of the home with a small thumb turn, and from the outside by using a key. If the latch does not deadbolt, then it’s easy for a burglar to slip a tool inside the door frame and open the latch.

Deadlocking night latches

These can be locked with a key on both sides of the door with two rim cylinders, and are most common on timber doors. A larger 60mm backset is usually required for these to secure them in the door, and as they deadlock the latch cannot be opened once the door has deadlocked. They are more secure than standard night latches, and are sometimes known as double locks for this reason.

Auto-deadlocking night latches

One the door slams shut, the auto-deadlocking night latch will engage and the door will lock securely. The latch cannot be pulled back without a key as the metal bolt goes straight from the cylinder into the plate on the frame. What’s more, if the internal latch has been deadlocked, then it can’t be opened from the inside, ideal if you have glass panelled doors where someone could gain access.

Smart night latches

For property owners who want to make their properties more accessible for tradespeople or tenants, then a smart night latch is a great option. These night latches can be controlled directly from a smartphone which opens the rim cylinder to allow access to the property. You can choose deadlocking night latches too that can only be opened with a special code for the front or back door for maximum security.

When considering the type of night latch you want, it’s also important to think about the brand as they have different styles and price ranges.

What kind of properties will benefit from a night latch?

Night latch installation is suitable for many types of properties, including landlords with multiple tenants that need a high level of security, especially in areas like Kensington.

We take care of everything from start to finish, positioning and drilling the holes for the plate and cylinder to sit perfectly, offering your tenants the security they need.

As locksmiths with lots of experience replacing old locks, screws and plates with modern brass or chrome versions, we can advise on the best insurance-compliant locks for residential and commercial properties.

Simple, Secure Front Door Protection

A night latch will only be fully secure if it has been awarded the BS3621 approval, or you can fit it with a strong and suitable mortice deadlock which has 5 or more levers.

If you’re installing a standard night latch in a timber door, make sure that the you combine it with a suitable deadlock, especially if you want to be able to make a valid insurance claim in case you suffer a break in.

An alternative to fitting two locks is to choose a cylinder, plate and key combination in a double locked latch that meets the BS8621 standards.

We’ve installed hundreds of night latches and cylinders on properties all over West and South West London, mostly in Chelsea and Kensington. So, we know exactly what it takes to ensure that everything is mounted properly for the highest levels of security.

Our team works hard to get the latch and strike plate to fit flush against the frame of the door, and we’ll make sure that there are no rough edges or screws sticking out of the plate to compromise the security of the lock.

How to install a night latch locks

First of all, we don’t recommend fitting a night latch yourself as a DIY job, as this type of lock needs precision to line up the position of the holes, the cylinder and the plate.

Backsets for night latches are usually 40mm in size, or there are larger 60mm backset sizes.

When drilling a hole for a cylinder, if should be just large enough to ensure a snug fit, approximately 32mm, and if you drill this hole too large, the angle won’t be right for the internal lock to sit flush in the centre.

The backset and position of the night latch plate need to be perfectly aligned at the right distance so the edges line up. Our night latch installation takes approximately 30 minutes and can be done at a time suitable for you.
