What is a night latch, and how does it work?
Rim night latches are often referred to as “Yale locks”. A night latch is a secondary security device that complements other styles of door lock with its keyhole to provide complete security.
A night latch is installed directly on the inside of a door that opens inwards, but it does have a rim cylinder on the outside so it can be opened with keys.
On the inside, there is usually either a small button or a lever which can unlock it, and this thumb turn allows you to open the door easily.
It is most suitable for composite style doors as well as wood doors, as the night latch lock fits securely into your door frame and can be left in the closed or open position.
Types of night latch locks
There are three main types of night latch often called Yale locks. You can have any of these night latches installed on your home by our locksmith: standard, deadlocking, and auto-deadlocking.
You ideally want a night latch that automatically shuts the door and locks it whenever it is closed.
Standard night latches
These latches are common on homes that need basic security and will not deadlock when closed, instead their spring mechanisms will automatically cause the door to lock. They can opened from the inside of the home with a small thumb turn, and from the outside by using a key. If the latch does not deadbolt, then it’s easy for a burglar to slip a tool inside the door frame and open the latch.
Deadlocking night latches
These can be locked with a key on both sides of the door with two rim cylinders, and are most common on timber doors. A larger 60mm backset is usually required for these to secure them in the door, and as they deadlock the latch cannot be opened once the door has deadlocked. They are more secure than standard night latches, and are sometimes known as double locks for this reason.
Auto-deadlocking night latches
One the door slams shut, the auto-deadlocking night latch will engage and the door will lock securely. The latch cannot be pulled back without a key as the metal bolt goes straight from the cylinder into the plate on the frame. What’s more, if the internal latch has been deadlocked, then it can’t be opened from the inside, ideal if you have glass panelled doors where someone could gain access.

How to install a night latch locks
First of all, we don’t recommend fitting a night latch yourself as a DIY job, as this type of lock needs precision to line up the position of the holes, the cylinder and the plate.
Backsets for night latches are usually 40mm in size, or there are larger 60mm backset sizes.
When drilling a hole for a cylinder, if should be just large enough to ensure a snug fit, approximately 32mm, and if you drill this hole too large, the angle won’t be right for the internal lock to sit flush in the centre.
